Every Reiki Practitioner is different, but generally what you should expect from a genuine Reiki Healer is the same.

The room where the healing takes place should feel welcoming and warm and look clean. The atmosphere should be one of calm. The children running around screaming or the dogs haring around the house and barking incessantly is not conducive to a calm and relaxing atmospher. You should also check that the healer is insured. Any reputable Reiki healer will have insurance. Also enquire about the cost. You may have already asked this when making your appointment, but if not now is the time to check as you may feel it is more than you wish to pay. It will be too late once you have recieved the healing.

Quite often the healer will work with background music which again should be of a calm and soothing nature and not a heavy metal band.

On arrival, especially if it is your first visit, the healer should first and foremost make you feel at ease and will probably ask you to sit, whilst they take a few details about you and the reason you are wanting healing. The details will probably be written on an index card. The sort of details they should ask is your name, address (though personally I don’t feel that this is essential, perhaps just the area is sufficient) a contact number and any medical problems you have and the name of your G.P.  You should also be asked whether you have or whether you intend to inform your G.P that you are receiving Reiki. It should also be explained to you that any medication you are taking, that has been prescribed by your medical practitioner, should continue to be taken. Under no circumstances should you be asked to stop taking your medicines, unless told to do so by your G.P. All these details should remain confidential between you and the healer. If at anytime you are not happy with what is being asked or said then it is my suggestion that you leave as the person offering healing may not be whom they claim to be.

So what happens after the administration is complete? The healer will ask you to either sit on a stool or chair, or lay on a couch. At no time should you be asked to remove any clothing apart from your outer coat and possibly shoes if lying on a couch. If you are asked to remove anything else, now is your time to leave. Reiki healing will go through any amount of clothing, you do not need to remove anything, it is really only for your own comfort to remove your outer coat and shoes.

Once you are comfortable the healing will begin. The background music will be playing and the general atmosphere should be calm. Dependent on whether you are sitting or laying will depend on how the healer begins.

If you are sitting the healer will probably stand behind you and rest their hands on your shoulders. This is the time that the healer is connecting to the Universal energy and becoming the channel for the energy to travel through and into you, the person wanting healing. Again dependent on the healer this may be the last time you feel the healers hands  until the healing is  complete as many healers work within the aura. With others however you feel the healers hands on different areas of your body throughout the healing. However you should never be touched inappropriately i.e. the breasts or genital regions. If this happens it’s time to leave.

If you are lying for your healing, the healer may cover you with a blanket or towel, this is to stop you getting chilly as whilst healing is taking place and the body becomes relaxed, the body temperature sometimes drops. The healer will  then probably scan your body within the aura. This is done to try and sense any areas of the body that may be hotter or colder, which may indicate an area of the body that is causing your medical problem and needs to be worked on within the healing. This done the healer will start again with their hands on your shoulders to make their connection with the Universal Energy. Again the healer may work in the aura or you will feel their hands throughout the healing.

A Reiki healing session can take up to an hour. At the end you should feel very calm and relaxed. You may be asked to come back for further healing, or it may be suggested that you decide for yourself whether you need more healing.

At the end you will be asked for the fee which should have been agreed at the beginning of the healing session. Again this will vary from healer to healer. But remember your are not paying for the healing as this is a gift. You are paying for the healers time.
